CYCLING INITIATIVES

Cycling is sport that stretches beyond just racing.
Kids' Cycling Safety
As part of the schedule of events, four separate children's races are organized to promote kids' cycling safety. The races are categorized into four separate age groups: 3-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11. All children receive free helmets and free entry. Instruction on proper helmet fit and use are provided to all kids and parents.
Event Carbon Footprint
This event's carbon emission data is being compiled from the roundtrip travel of all racers, race staff, vendors, and government service providers, as well as from the activities of those involved in pre-event planning and promotion. Mileage associated with the planning, promotion, and production of the event will be offset by a generous donation from Clean Currents, one of our sponsors. If anyone is interested in learning more about how to organize and collect data in order to run a carbon neutral event, please visit www.dcvelo.com/guidelines.php, where you will find useful guidelines, or contact Ryan McKinney at rmckinney@dcvelo.com.
2010 Event Carbon Footprint Results
The 2010 event carbon emission data was compiled from the roundtrip travel of all racers, race staff, vendors, and government service providers, as well as from the activities of those involved in pre-event planning and promotion. Mileage associated with the planning, promotion, and production of the event broke down as follows:
9,129 Airline mileage
3,048 Trucks and heavy machinery mileage
10,354 Vehicle mileage
The mileage and transportation type produced a total of 22,531 lbs. of CO2 emissions. Those CO2 emissions were offset by 17 RECs (one renewable energy credit offsets 1,400 lbs of CO2 emissions).
